Future of Workplace Trends

According to Challenger, Gray & Christmas the future workplace will be a very different environment.

An Increase in Teleconferencing, a Decrease in Business Travel. Higher airfares along with environmental concerns will prompt more companies to look at teleconferencing as an alternative to travel.

A Shift to Social Networking Sites for Employee Recruitment. Over the next 10 years, the firm sees a shift away from traditional print ads and job boards to social networking sites.

The Four-Day Work Week. A new survey finds that 23 percent of companies currently offer a condensed work week, which typically consists of four 10-hour days.
Rising gas prices along with continued emphasis on work-life balance will make four-day work weeks the new standard.

Corporate Degree Programs. The need for workers with advanced skills and creative abilities will lead companies to enter into the business of educating future, potential employees. Companies will create entire programs with course work focused on corporate culture and goals.

Global Talent Pools. As the global economy continues to expand so too will the global talent pool. Geography will become less important as employers seek to recruit talent worldwide.

Community Space In Lieu of Cubes. The cube farm will be scrapped in favour of wide open spaces that foster community and collaboration. An open environment will allow for greater mobility. It will also accommodate the increasing number of telecommuters who work onsite only occasionally.

Free Agents Rule. More employees will become free agents as more companies look to hire people on a project basis and workers seek to control their careers.
Challenger cites a report that finds free agents are expected to represent 40 percent of the workforce by 2012.

Corporate Headquarters Obsolete. The traditional workplace and the traditional worker are changing and so too will the corporate headquarters and Challenger, Gray & Christmas predicts that, within 20 years, the corporate headquarters of today will become nearly extinct.

Aussie recruiters nominated to global NPA board

Two Australian recruiters have been nominated to the board of global recruiting network NPA - Jason Elias and Christine Sturgess.

Elias, who owns boutique legal consultancy Elias Recruitment in Sydney, and Sturgess, who owns Orex Retail Search in Melbourne, will represent 130 Australian NPA members for a second two-year term. They were previously co-directors but following a re-structure of the board they will each have a vote, dividing their responsibilities informally so that Elias oversees Queensland, NSW and WA members, and Sturgess the remaining states.

The pair will be officially elected at the annual meeting of NPA next month in Texas, USA.

Both have been recruiting for about 10 years.

Is it time to work with your competitors?

Recruiter Daily, 20 April 2009

Recruiters should stop viewing each other as competition and work together to make more placements, says Elias Recruitment director Jason Elias.

Working with recruiters from other agencies in split-fee arrangements helps him to make around 25 per cent more placements than he otherwise would, he says.

While he is now a member of the not-for-profit co-operative NPA (and its Australian director), Elias was having success with splits long before joining. Usually, they were a result of connections formed with other recruiters at social events that developed into mutually beneficial working partnerships.

He says that splitting is "not for everyone" and, "it took me a while to get my head around working with 'competitors'", but splits have become a cornerstone of his business.

There are several different ways of doing a split but essentially it involves two recruiters sharing the fee when one places a candidate who was sourced in some way by the other. (The candidate might have already been interviewed and reference checked by the referring recruiter, or might just be someone from another industry who they would otherwise have no means to place in a job.) The amount of the split is negotiated between the parties to reflect the amount of work each was responsible for.

Last year, for example, a recruiter from Newcastle met a lawyer at a function who asked for assistance with her recruitment, Elias says. "Rather than say 'no thanks', he suggested she contact us at Elias Recruitment, as we are legal specialists. From that introduction, we made a number of placements and that client was one of our best last year."

Formal bodies like NPA provide - through their strict guidelines and vetting processes - a great deal of protection from "rip-offs", but recruiters and agencies that aren't members can still do splits so long as they "document everything, possibly see a lawyer, and only work with people you trust", Elias says.

Jason Elias featured in Recruitment Extra

Director Jason Elias is featured in the June 2010 edition of Recruitment Extra, a monthly magazine which publishes a blend of industry news and developments, editorial features and individual and business profiles.

Jason answered the question: "What is the current global attitude of your clients and candidates in relation to recruitment or career needs and how does this influence your business direction?"

Our focus is primarily in the legal services sector, which is a good litmus test for the rest of the economy. When confidence is up, deals happen and lawyers are busy.

Overall there has been a clear increase in positive hiring sentiment since late last year and the first quarter of this calendar year was pretty bullish. Since May, this has cooled slightly and there is some caution returning to the market. There are more roles but clients are being very selective and the recruitment process is taking longer. Counteroffers are also prevalent especially with Gen Y candidates.

There has been a similar increase in jobseeker confidence and many who were glad to hold on to their jobs last year are actively considering new opportunities. There is a feeling that there may be a flood of candidates in the new financial year if pay reviews do not meet expectations. Many candidates endured salary freezes during the GFC and are expecting significant pay increases this year.

Overall, this is a much better time than last year and there is a lot to be positive about. However whilst global issues such as Europeb
