OVERVIEW OF THE ROLE
The Legal Director will oversee all legal strategy and compliance within the organisation, ensuring adherence to all relevant regulations and providing legal guidance across a range of functions. Working remotely, you will collaborate closely with senior management, offering both legal support and strategic advice on internal matters.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Review and interpret relevant government regulations, ensuring adherence to evolving policy changes and maintaining compliance.
- Ensure that internal policies and procedures align with all relevant legal and regulatory standards.
- Manage all internal legal matters, including onboarding documentation, contractor and client agreements, and employment-related legal issues.
- Provide strategic legal advice to senior management to support operational decisions and mitigate risks across various functions.
- Liaise with clients and third parties as the legal point of contact regarding unpaid invoices and collection processes, ensuring legal compliance throughout.
- Submit and manage Freedom of Information (FOI) requests to stay informed about relevant government processes and internal procedures.
- Analyse and share insights gained from FOI responses to enhance advocacy efforts and improve operational outcomes.
THE IDEAL CANDIDATE
- An Australian-qualified solicitor with an unrestricted NSW practising certificate (preferred) or eligibility to obtain one.
- At least 8 years of post-qualification experience, with strong knowledge of administrative law, government entitlements, FOI, policy, or public interest legal work.
- Proven experience in a senior legal or in-house counsel role, with the ability to manage complex legal matters.
- A strong understanding of government processes, particularly within Commonwealth administrative bodies or similar statutory agencies, is highly desirable.
- Experience in a remote, independent working environment is advantageous, as the role requires managing work autonomously.
- Passionate about public service, with a high level of ethics, independence, and empathy.
- Strong communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to thrive in a dynamic, mission-driven legal environment.
